I’ve been teasing it for the past few weeks, but on June 1, we finally had our student meetup! We had 80 students come from all around the world to meet each other - most of us meeting for the very first time in person! It was so incredible, emotional, and special to connect with the students that I’ve known over the screen (some of them for more than 5 years!) and finally hug them in real life...

Wow, everything she said is 100% true. Yes I have been living in a Sate for over a decades and still struggling with my fluency. It gets really frustrated over time when unable to achieve the fluency in your targeted language. My limited beliefs is because of the English language I am unable to achieve my career goals.

One belief I usually have is that as a teacher, having an accent makes me less worthy of a teacher, and being paid so low reinforces that idea further. So many native teachers make twice what I make without ever having to study the language, my pronunciation is excellent, but even my face shouts LATINO all the time.

Hello! I’m Ian, and I’m from the USA. The “R” in 🇺🇸 American English is always pronounced in the back of your throat, with he sides of the tongue braced against the inner upper teeth and the top of your tongue curled up, but not touching anything. But when there’s a “thr” combination, the “r” sound is pronounced differently. The tongue is in the front of the mouth, the back parts of your tongue rise up to make a combination similar to a slide 🛝.

I don't have such negative feelings when I speak with others. I can confidently speak English. I am from Nepal, a physics teacher, and an educational researcher. I have to communicate with several Educational researchers in the United States. When I talked to them they were surprised to listen to my English speaking. One of my friends who has stayed in the United States for the last 20 years claimed that my English speaking is better than many other immigrants in the United States. I feel proud of myself for having reached that level of speaking English. The credit goes to Hadar and her team. Had I not been in contact with Hadar's RUclips videos my English speaking wouldn't have reached this incredible height. Thanks, Hadar for your invaluable contributions!

Conclusion: one of the options for the dark L sound is pharyngealization, making it somewhat similar to the sound /ʕ/ that is present in Arabic and represented by the letter ع, except that for this one the tip of the tongue should still touch the alveolar ridge and split the mouth to two airways.
